Submission Guidelines
Filmmakers should carefully observe the following guidelines when filling out the
submission form for their films.
Remember to also check out:
Your name and e-mail address
We ask for your name and e-mail address exclusively for direct contact reasons. We do not post this information anywhere on our website, we do not give or sell this information to any other third party, and we do not send you spam or newsletters or anything not directly pertinent to your movie's listing on our site. Once you have submitted your information, we will send an e-mail to this address confirming that the information has been posted to the site or alerting you of problems with your submission. Also, if you have chosen a priority level other than 1x, we will send a PayPal bill to this e-mail address.
Film title
This is the title of your film, or an abbreviation of your title. Keep the title short (maximum of 14-16 characters), or else the beginning and end will look cut-off on the front page. Instead of "The Best of Friends" (19 characters) just use "Best of Friends" (15 characters). If the film has a longer title than can fit, abbreviate it here and then include the full title in the description.
Name of author, director, or producer
Give the name of the person most responsible for the film, or possibly two names if they are both short. More people involved in the production can be credited in the description field.
Genre
Enter a genre that you think best describes the film. You are not limited to specific choices, but sometimes users will search by basic genres, so you might want to keep it simple. Alternative genres can be listed in the keywords so that searches pick those up as well.
Runtime (minutes)
The runtime of the film should be expressed as minutes ("128") or minutes and seconds for a short ("3:57"). Type in only the number, and do not include "min." or "minutes" afterwards.
Language
The default language is English and can be left as is if your film is in English. If the language in your film is not English, enter the language.
Keywords
Keywords are never seen by the user, but they are the basis for the search feature on the website. List words or phrases that pertain to your film and that may appear in a user's search query, separating each word with a comma and a space. For instance, for a film about a surfing, you might want to list "surfer, surfing, California, beaches, waves" etc. It's also helpful to enter the plural form of nouns if the singular is contained in the plural (ex. "beaches" instead of "beach"). This is because if you only list "beach," someone who searches for "beaches" will not see your film, but if you enter "beaches," someone who searches for either "beach" or "beaches" will find it.
Image file (URL)
One of the most important features of Engio.com is that movies are presented with poster images. All films listed on the site must be accompanied by a poster image, and we will not add your information until we receive it. The image should be designed like a regular movie poster, and it should suggest the nature of the film in terms of content, actors, genre, and style. This is the first thing users will see, and if the poster is not interesting, they may pass by your film without even reading the description. If you want ideas about what movie posters look like, you might want to browse a site like
AllPosters.com.
Technical requirements: The image file of the poster should be 150 pixels wide and 215 pixels high, and it should be saved as a ".jpg" or ".gif" file. If you already have a poster image larger than these dimensions, and you do not know how to rescale it, just send it to us anyway. The images are automatically given a thin black border on the web site, so there is no need to add a border yourself unless it pertains to your design.
Hint: It's often easier to start working on an image twice the desired size (so in this case, 300 pixels wide by 430 pixels high), and then when you're finished, shrink the image to half-size. This allows you greater control over the detail of the poster while you're designing it.
Once you have your image, if possible, post it online somewhere (perhaps in your personal web space, or maybe on a photo-sharing site) and enter the URL location of the file in this space. Alternatively,
you can send the image file as an e-mail attachment to "

". In the space on the form, just write "None." Unfortunately, we cannot post your information until we receive your poster image.
Preview file (URL)
Engio.com gives you the opportunity to embed a streaming preview of your movie right in your movie's information box so that viewers can get a taste of what's to come if they decide to download your film. This preview file can either be a trailer for the film, or it could just be a short excerpt. In general, the preview file should not last longer than thirty seconds to a minute.
The preview file will be displayed as 220 pixels wide and 165 pixels high, which is the same standard 4:3 ratio. You should either export the file in those specific dimensions (220x165) or in the more common 320x240. Save your file as a compressed ".mov" or ".mpg" for Quicktime or as a ".wmv" or ".avi" file for Windows Media Player.
We strongly recommend posting your preview file on
OurMedia.org because we have tested to make sure that it is possible to stream files from there. If you know the static URL of the file (which may be difficult), enter that here, or else enter the static URL of the web page for the file. You may also send an e-mail with the preview file attached to "

" and we will post it for you on OurMedia.org, but obviously we would prefer if you would do it yourself.
Note: If you have chosen to stream your video from a site such as YouTube.com or Google Video, you will often be given a chunk of HTML code for embedding the file in a blog or web page. As long as you list this source as a "Stream" in the "Downloads" section, we will try to use that code block as your preview file if you leave this field blank. However, if you have a specific preview file that you would prefer to be shown, such as a trailer or teaser, enter the URL of the file here.
Website (URL)
Enter the URL address of a website that corresponds to the film. This can either be the website or blog of the producer, the official homepage of the film, the store online where you're selling DVD copies, whatever. It is just an opportunity for people to learn more about your film before or after viewing it.
Description
The description of your film is usually the second thing that users will see after the poster image. You can include any pertinent information you like about the film, including a summary, background information about how it was made, credits for cast and crew, alternative titles, etc. In order to make the site look attractive and presentable, we ask that you please compose your description in a word editing program first and make sure that all spelling, capitalization, and grammar is correct. We reserve the right to make minor corrections to your information in this regard, but we will not publish information about a movie that completely fails to meet these requirements.
Downloads and streams
The most important part of the site is the list of links to the movie files. Fill out this section and then click the "Add additional files" link as many times as necessary to provide the information about alternative versions or mirror sites for the same film. Viewers may want to download a smaller, lower-quality version of the movie first to check it out, and then spend the time downloading the full-quality version later, so if possible, include a variety of options.
Important note for Google Video users: If you've hosted your file on Google Video, you'll notice that Google offers a variety of download options. All you need to do, however, is give us the stable URL to the streaming video, and we'll take care of the rest. Read the instructions below for help determining this stable URL.
Location (URL)
Enter the URL location of the particular file. Unless the file is an embedded stream, try to identify the static URL of the file itself (i.e. the URL should end in the extension of the file, such as ".mov" or ".avi"). If you've hosted the file on a site but are having trouble finding the static URL, e-mail us and we'll try to find it for you. If the file is a stream, just enter the URL of the page that contains the embedded movie.
Sometimes when it's difficult to determine the URL of a file, a good trick is to have your hosting site e-mail the link to you. On the page where your can see your movie, there is often a "E-mail this movie to a friend" link. Just click on that and send it to your own address. When it arrives in your e-mail, copy and paste the URL into this form.
Quality
Just select the general quality of the individual file. It's all relative, so if you are posting multiple versions, list the larger ones as high quality and the smaller ones as lower quality.
Size (mb)
Enter the size, in megabytes, of the file that your are submitting. Just type the number ("68") instead of typing the number followed by the word "megabytes" or "mb." If the file is a stream, enter the bitrate, in kbps, of the file instead of its size.
File type
Choose the type of file that you are submitting from the list provided. For ".mov" files choose "Quicktime" and for ".wmv" files choose "Windows Media." If the file is streamed within a webpage, just choose "Stream." In this case, it does not matter whether the file is for Quicktime, Windows Media Player, or Flash.
Priority (optional)
Priority multiplies the likelihood that a user will see your movie. Every movie submitted to Engio.com automatically receives a standard priority rating of "1x," meaning that when the movies are randomly sorted and presented to the view five-at-a-time, it is just as likely that your film will show up early on as any other film rated "1x." However, you have the completely optional choice of upgrading to a higher priority rating. A movie with a priority of "2x" appears twice as often as a movie with a "1x" rating, and a movie with a priority of "3x" appear three times as often, etc.
If you decide to list your film at any priority rating other than the standard "1x," Engio.com charges you a fee of essentially $10.00 multiplied by the priority level. The prices are listed in the drop-down menu. Upgraded priority ratings last at least three months from the time they are officially upgraded, after which point they are reduced again to "1x." If you would like to keep your higher priority rating for more than three months, contact us for pricing, or e-mail us after your three months have expired to request an extension.
As of right now we are only able to bill with PayPal, which means you must have an active PayPal account to choose this option. If you select a higher priority level, we will send a PayPal invoice to your e-mail address for the chosen amount. If you do not have an active PayPal account, please contact us directly at "

" to discuss payment. Your movie information may be added to the site initially with a "1x" rating until we receive and confirm your payment, at which time your three-month period will officially begin.
